The drawings were a breakthrough for me this year, they evolved from the windings. I always viewed the windings as a type of drawing (see the Landmass video). The added step with the panels is to build up the drawing with thousand of strands of specially prepared glass and then fuse the whole thing together in a kiln. The color pallet is achieved by mixing various ratios of green, amber and clear to create a wide range of values. The panels range in thickness from ½" to ¾". more>
The process starts with collecting the bottles, sorting the colors removing all the steel rings and caps and crushing. From here the color ratio is mixed and other elements are added to make the stiff bottle glass more malleable. Then the whole batch is melted in the furnace. Each strand is pulled from a gather off the pipe onto a specially designed tool which enables me to rapidly pull any quality line. more>
